The College of Basic and Applied Science and Departments of Biology and Chemistry submit a joint proposal to enhance selected Microbiology and Physiology laboratories (Biology) and selected Organic and Biochemistry laboratories (Chemistry). Students enrolled in these courses are majors in one of the departments, pre-nursing, or pre-professional students. All but one laboratory meets for 3 hours/week and all are located in the Davis Science Building. Microbiology laboratories are: BIOL 2231 and 2231H (General Microbiology, 500 enrolled/year), and upper division courses (BIOL 3211, 4431, 4441, 4511, and 4731, which enroll 125/year). Physiology laboratories are: BIOL 4111, 4211, 4301, 4561, 4571, 4501, and 4591 enroll 325/year. Chemistry department courses to be upgraded are Organic Chemistry (CHEM 2030, 3010, 3011, 3020, 3021—631 students from fall and summer of 2007 and spring 2008.) and biochemistry (CHEM 3530, 4510, 4530—345 students). All courses listed are typically offered several times a year, are technology rich with multiple instruments and impact approximately1,900 students/year. Both departments are committed to hands on learning, and up to date equipment in sufficient quantities are essential. Items requested either replace existing older items, represent new technology, or are needed to provide more hands on experiments.
