General education science electives are given a high priority as classroom schedules are planned. The Department of Physics and Astronomy currently shares use of WPS 201 with the Department of Chemistry for general education science offerings. The room is used primarily for Physical Science laboratory PSCI 1031, but it is under utilized due to a lack of capabilities – a single chalkboard is the only presentation media available. Beginning in fall, 2009, we will begin offering a newly approved general education science elective, PHYS 1110, and expect significant student demand. The course is currently not scheduled in WPS 201 due the lack of master classroom facilities. Dr. Pearson, chair of the Department of Chemistry, has referred to this project as a “win-win” proposal for each of our departments – potentially benefiting PHYS, ASTR, and PSCI courses. Conversion of this room to a master classroom will also assist the backfilling of WPS in anticipation of the new science building. Our department is scheduled to remain in WPS after Chemistry has moved, and renovation of this space now will better position us for full utilization of the building in the future.
