AMG 214 was converted to a master classroom approximately ten years ago. Used primarily by the English Department for composition instruction, classes are scheduled in AMG 214 on most days from 6:50 a.m. until 7:25 p.m. In 2009, 32 classes enrolling approximately 600 students were scheduled in the room. The current configuration of the classroom is not conducive to the teaching of composition. In addition to individual student work on computers, composition instruction also includes lecture, whole class discussion, and small group activities. There are two rows of student computers in the center of the classroom, discouraging class discussion and limiting group work. Because of the layout, it is also difficult for the instructor to see all of the students in the room. We propose renovating the classroom following the recent master classroom model implemented in the English Department’s classrooms in Peck Hall 300, 304B, and 327. In these rooms, student computers are installed against the walls, and a large conference table is placed in the center of the room. The following estimate to renovate AMG 214 was provided by Watson Harris.
