The HSC Annex is scheduled to be razed and will no longer be available to the Human Sciences Department. Over 14,000 square feet of space will be lost. Students and faculty must have a place to go with appropriate equipment and technology! Renovation of the LRC to house Interior Design and Textiles, Merchandising and Design students requires that learning spaces be equipped and technologically adequate to produce graduates prepared for current and future professional expectations. The budget for the renovation does not complete the project. Approximately 300 students will be directly impacted by the new studio spaces with another 400 in the department indirectly affected by the change in facilities. MTSU offers the only Apparel Design program in the state and the Interior Design program must maintain Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) accreditation. Current technology such as the 3D Body Scanner and latest versions of design software are imperative for students to compete for national and international design and manufacturing jobs. Interior Design majors, charged with protecting the health, safety and welfare of the general public, must be prepared to enter the modern architectural/design office and to qualify to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) national licensing exam. For these programs to meet accreditation requirements, thrive and grow, studios must be equipped to meet current standards and allow the programs to move into the renovated spaces.
