Non-Attendance (Unofficial Withdrawal)

Faculty at MTSU report student attendance at the beginning of the term and may additionally report attendance beyond that date. If a student is reported as “Stopped Attending” or “Never Attended” in all enrolled courses within a semester, the student is considered “unofficially withdrawn” from the University. Unofficial withdrawals may have serious impact on the student‘s financial aid status.

Ceasing to attend classes without withdrawing will result in a grade of "F" or “FA”; therefore, it is imperative that you speak with your professor(s) immediately if you encounter personal or academic difficulties which disrupt class attendance. You should also consult with the MT One Stop for support and guidance as early as possible. Grades, financial aid, and housing can potentially be affected by simply dropping out. Early intervention and action reduce complications for all concerned.

Potential Financial Aid Consequences

  • If non-attendance (never or stopped attending) is reported before the census date of the semester, your federal, state, and institutional aid may be cancelled or reduced.  Students receiving military tuition assistance will have TA funds prorated and returned.
  • If non-attendance is reported for all enrolled courses, you will be considered unofficially withdrawn and MTSU must perform a Federal Return of Title IV Funds Calculation.
  • If you unofficially withdraw or drop below half-time, MTSU must notify your loan servicer and your six month grace period for loan repayment will begin.
  • Non-attendance may result in a ‘FA’ grade and may have a negative impact on your eligibility to receive financial aid in the future, including the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship (TELS). Refer to the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress policy and to the TELS rules webpage  
  • Non-attendance can also impact GI Bill® funding. Please refer to the General Guidelines to follow once you have enrolled for details.                                                                           

If financial aid is cancelled or reduced because of non-attendance, you will most likely owe a balance. If you have any concerns about your reported attendance, you need to contact your instructor. Only your instructor can update or change a reported attendance date if needed.

  1. Log into PipelineMT
  2. Click on the Registration and Student Resources menu
  3. Under Academic Records, click on Attendance
  4. Select the term
