Many students find meaning in their college experience insofar as it contributes to specific vocational outcomes. But what happens when an outcome isn't what the student envisioned? Survey data has shown that only a minority of college graduates end up in careers that reflect their college major and that nearly half of all college graduates would change the major they pursued. Graduates in this predicament may think, what was the meaning of getting a degree? Using Vygotsky's concept of the zone of proximal development, this interactive presentation shows advisors how to help students find meaning in their college experience in ways that are not tied to vocational aspirations.
