For your audition

Please prepare the following:

  • To be considered for a role in all shows:
    • One contemporary monologue that is approximately 60-90 seconds in length.
    • One pantomime 30-60 sec in length.
      • The goal is to see you physicalize the sequence of actions it takes for a character to carry out a specific activity.
      • Your pantomime does NOT have to tell a story with a beginning/middle/end, but rather show how you can use movement as expressive communication.
      • Choose from one of the following actions: baking a cake, gardening, setting a big family dinner table

*If you are an MTSU Theatre Major, you must audition for all shows to be considered for any role. MTSU Casting Policy is available at MTSU Theatre | Auditions

Please use the audition form (https://forms.office.com/r/LmeXvEE6uG) to submit audition information. You may upload your headshot and resume directly to this form. Once you have filled out the form, if auditioning in person, select an audition slot time (https://signup.com/go/mmPSctf)

Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your audition time to check in with stage management at the audition desk outside of the Theatre and Dance Main office located on the 2nd floor of the Boutwell Dramatic Arts Building.

A video audition including your monologue and pantomime may be considered in lieu of in person audition. If you would like to submit a video audition, please email John.Underwood@mtsu.edu for more information. Anyone being considered for a role may be required to attend in-person call backs. Video audition must be sent by 11/7/2024

Callbacks are scheduled to occur on campus on November 11th & 12th 6:00 pm – 10 pm. Callbacks may consist of scene work, cold reads, and devising with our Directors and other auditionees. The schedule of individual callbacks will be communicated and based on conflicts listed on the audition form. Additional callback requirements and questions specific to the show will be communicated prior to your callback session.

Participation

We understand not all students will have the same experience in auditioning for an MTSU production. Faculty, staff, and students would love to connect and can provide some insight on how the audition process may go. If you are new to this process and would like to learn more, please reach out to Production Manager - John Underwood or Stage Management Faculty - Kate Goodwin.

Prospective participants have the right to ask about details pertaining to their participation, including how cultural personhood or identities will be portrayed in the production. Please email any questions to the director or reach out to faculty or administrative staff in the department with any concerns. The wellbeing of our cast and crew is the highest priority. If you have questions regarding your participation and safety, please reach out directly to John Underwood, stage management team, and our directors.

Tomato Plant Girl
Written by Wesley Middleton
Directed by Alicia Fuss

This powerful exploration of friendship delights young audiences with its sharp dialogue, physical action and playful, high-energy conflict. Little Girl is the new kid in Heretown. Good thing she's got her Bossy Best Friend! The girls share a garden where time moves to the rhythm of Bossy's commands until the day Little Girl can no longer obey. Bossy has forbidden Little Girl to touch her precious tomato plant. But if the plant doesn't get watered soon, it will die. When Bossy leaves to visit her grandma, Little Girl uproots the plant in a valiant rescue, and a messy girl-creature springs out of the earth, spitting up dirt and crying red tears. Soon, Little Girl is playing crazy new games with Tomato Plant Girl and teaching her to say "please." Maybe Little Girl has found a new Best Friend. But what will they do when Bossy returns? And what if Tomato Plant Girl won't stay? When her friendships collide and Little Girl has to choose, she discovers the power of making up her own rules.

Little Girl:
A small girl, about 10 years old. Recently moved to Heretown from Thereville. Loves books and tomatoes
