American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Student Unit
The object of this section shall be to create a greater understanding of the significant place of the family and consumer sciences professional in our society and to stimulate action which will lead toward the realization of an optimum environment which will provide for the total well-being of the family and the individual. The Association has a monthly meeting and offers a variety of community service and fundraising activities. Students are encouraged to participate in the Association at all levels. Graduate study is also encouraged. The MTSU Student Activity Department assists students with funding for travel to professional conferences. More information can be found at the following sites:
American Society of Interior Designers (ASID)
MTSU Student Chapter ASID
ASID is comprised of professional interior designers throughout the U.S. and Canada. Practicing interior designers usually join ASID under one of two membership categories, Professional Member or Allied Member. You are not required by law to be a member of ASID in order to practice interior design.
Members are comprised of both residential and commercial designers. To qualify for Allied Membership, the designer must have graduated with a degree in interior design from an accredited university. Accreditation does not necessarily mean FIDER accreditation (see FIDER below). These members either have not passed the NCIDQ exam (see NCIDQ below) or are designers who do not practice interior design on a full time basis (such as interior design educators).
Among qualification requirements for Professional Membership, the designer must pass the NCIDQ exam. Professional Members are required to take continuing education courses to maintain their memberships.
ASID also has Student Members who join the society through their university ASID Student Chapters. Not all schools are allowed by ASID to have a chapter. MTSU does have a student chapter.
NCFR - Certified Family Life Educators
National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) sponsors the only national program to certify family life educators. The Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) program encourages applications from all professionals with course work and experience in family life education including formal teaching, community education, curriculum and resource development, health care, military family support, counseling, and ministry.
Check out the NCFR-CFLE website for more information.
Nutrition and Dietetic Association (NDA)
The Nutrition and Dietetic Association (NDA) is a student-run organization for nutrition
and food science majors. The NDA works to promote student visibility, support networking
engagements, and provide professional opportunities to up-and-coming nutrition professionals.
Getting involved with the NDA is an excellent way to build your volunteer and leadership
experiences for internship applications and for your future career. Members will have
the opportunity to interact with peers, faculty members, and other dietetic professionals
outside the classroom, which offers networking possibilities. Some of the volunteer
activities that the NDA has participated in or conducted are canned food drives for
Second Harvest Food Back and local shelters, bake sales to raise money for scholarships, St.
Jude Children's Research Hospital fund raisers, Sole for Soles shoe drive, nursing
home bingo, See Spot Run 5K, Operation Christmas Child, and various health fairs held
at MTSU.
The NDA has a bulletin board in the EHS building. The bulletin board has information
about meeting times and membership applications, a calendar with upcoming volunteer
activities, and other information related to the NDA. Students should check the board
frequently for new information.
The National Retail Federation (NRF) Foundation
The National Retail Federation (NRF) Foundation provides students with opportunities and resources to pursue a promising retail career. Connecting students and retail companies together, NRF aids in bettering lives and communities.
Check out The National Retail Federation (NRF) Foundation website for more information.
