Greetings from the Dean of the College of Media and Entertainment

Beverly Keel

I am delighted to welcome you to the website of MTSU’s College of Media and Entertainment, not only because I am the dean, but because I am also a proud graduate.  Choosing MTSU was one of the best decisions of my life and I know our students feel the same way. The 160-strong faculty, staff and administrators of the College look forward to having you on our campus soon.

We are the only College of Media and Entertainment in the world, so we provide an unparalleled education. We prepare students for careers in everything that informs or entertains you, whether it’s accessed through a phone, computer, video screen or speaker. We provide a supportive and nurturing environment that fosters creativity, innovation, teamwork and diversity.

In addition to being immersed in our state-of-the-art communication and technology facilities led by our world-renowned faculty, students go where the action is. Journalism students cover the presidential race in Iowa, while recording industry students go backstage at the Grammy Awards and run a stage at Bonnaroo. Media Arts students handle live productions for ESPN and attend televised awards shows on the West Coast. Digital animation students create works for national competitions.

Our students get to work at two radio stations, a television station, newspaper and student-run record label and intern at some of the biggest names in media and entertainment, from Nashville and New York to Los Angeles, England, France and beyond.

Our alumni have won Grammys, Emmys and virtually every other award in their fields. Our students go on to be recording artists, songwriters, music executives, audio producers and engineers, journalists, advertisers, public relations professionals, photographers, digital animators, film makers, social media leaders, etc.

This is truly a special place that offers the best of both worlds. MTSU has the resources and opportunities of a major university, yet it remains a close-knit group where students always come first.  For most of our students, walking onto MTSU’s campus feels like coming home. Unfortunately, many of our students didn’t feel understood during high school because they were serious about media and entertainment. But at MTSU, they find kindred spirits with whom they enjoy sharing their passions, whether it is analyzing Taylor Swift’s lyrics or discussing the latest social media or journalism news. It’s a place where you will meet lifelong friends, just as I did.

It was at MTSU that I prepared for a multi-faceted career in media and entertainment. Professors provided me with support and encouragement and challenged me to think critically and communicate effectively. My MTSU degree serves as the foundation for a career that has included positions as a newspaper columnist, magazine editor, record label executive and music publicist.

While technology, media and entertainment have changed since my days as a student, the professors’ commitment to their students has remained steadfast.  Students are the priority at MTSU ad we devote our days to improving their lives.

There has never been a more exciting time to be a part of our college, whether you join journalism, strategic media, public relations, advertising, digital media, broadcasting, photography, film and television production, or the recording industry. Indeed, we will arm you with the skills necessary to maneuver the changing media landscape and succeed in jobs that don’t yet exist!

Thank you for spending part of your day with us. We hope you can come to campus soon to see how special this campus is. We are proud to call it home.
