art pages, playlists, and snacks that will get them started on developing healthy
habits they can use in college and take with them into their careers.

Understanding the global marketplace is essential in today's business environment.
This workshop will teach students about various differences in cultures around the
globe (e.g., gestures, colors, language translations, traditions) and how this impacts
marketing. As part of this workshop, students will be given the opportunity to try
a variety of name brand food-based products from around the world (e.g., Japan, U.K.,
Turkey, Colombia, Venezuela, etc.). Students will also engage in hands-on activities
to recognize the vast amount of global products in the United States. Additional marketing
topics as it relates to these cultural differences will be discussed. International
foods, t-shirts, and other prizes will be provided.

“The Banned Books Week Coalition is an international alliance of diverse organizations
joined by a commitment to increase awareness of the annual celebration of the freedom
to read. The Coalition seeks to engage various communities and inspire participation
in Banned Books Week through education, advocacy, and the creation of programming
about the problem of book censorship. Books unite us. Books encourage boundless exploration
and allow readers to spread their wings. Stories give flight to new ideas and perspectives.
Reading—especially books that set us free—expands our worldview. Censorship, on the
other hand, locks away our freedom and divides us from humanity in our own cages.” (https://bannedbooksweek.org/)
This event will include selected readings from banned books along with discussion
protocols empowering attendees to think critically about the books being banned and
why. During the event, leaders will have trivia questions provided by https://bannedbooksweek.org, and hand out door prizes provided by the College of Education and the Writing Center.
Attendees will experience a gallery walk, discussing and analyzing from a list of
banned books. All attendees will take home one book.

Have you ever wanted to learn more about our Makerspace? We're happy to bring back
one of our favorite events with the Makerspace Open House, brought to you in partnership
with MT Engage. Join us on Wednesday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. as we feature demos
from our 3D printers, laser etcher, robotics, virtual reality, and so much more. In
addition to all of this, our staff will be on hand to answer questions about how to
get started and the best ways to utilize the equipment. We hope to see you there!
The Walker Library Makerspace is an active learning environment for students, faculty,
and staff to use technology to participate in experiential project-based learning.
The value of the Makerspace experience is in innovation and access — the creation

The MTSU College of Education’s Early Childhood Education faculty and Early Learning programs invite local early childhood educators and MTSU students to register now for the Play Symposium 2022 scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1. The Play Symposium is a conference for early childhood educators designed to emphasize
the value of play. This year the focus will be on promoting the social and emotional
well-being of children through play. This year’s gathering — from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 1 in the College of Education building — will feature multiple expert speakers,
breakout sessions and a finale keynote address by Grammy-winning Zac Brown Band guitarist
and children’s author Coy Bowles.

The Difficult Conversations: Communicating through Tough Times event addresses the
need for students to develop communication skills for navigating difficult conversations
in relationships, organizations, and civic life. Students are invited to interact

open-house event on October 18 from 11:30-1 is open to all members of the university
community and will feature information, trainings, and resources on topics such as
conflict management, communication and diversity, civil dialogue, reflective listening,
relationship communication, and implicit bias to help with difficult conversations.

ePortfolio Writing; Engaging in Reflection to Establish Connections

Reflective writing is an important component in ePortfolios, but engaging in reflection
can be challenging. The University Writing Center (UWC) and MT Engage have paired
up to help! During MT Engage week 2021, the UWC ePortfolio Program Coordinator will
facilitate a 60 min., interactive reflecting writing workshop designed to help students deepen their reflective practice.
Students will be introduced to a reflective process that helps them brainstorm ideas,
connect their academic and lived experiences, and make new meaning out of their reflections.
Students will also consider how to write reflectively for a variety of audiences:
MT Engage scholarship judges, MTSU faculty, and potential employers/graduate school
