Description:

This newly created course studies the various populations and ethnic communities of Nashville, revealing connections between their origins, their music, and place in the civic life of the city, as well as the way various city and state policies have impacted the presence and development of these communities and traditions. Some of the traditions and communities discussed include the “Nashville Sound” of Music Row, the “Soul” of Jefferson Street, the Colonial Era’s Appalachian Ballad, the antebellum African American Spiritual at Fisk University and the 21st Century sound collage of Kurdish, Ethiopian, Egyptian Coptic and especially the Latino musical traditions in Antioch.
