In order to encourage student success, university faculty members are increasingly charged with making their courses relevant to the workplace. At the same time, we are concerned that our students receive an education that enlightens them and helps them form a love of learning that will last a lifetime. We may feel that we are being stretched between these seemingly conflicting goals. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) can help us accomplish both by connecting course content to application in students’ careers, whether in job settings or in professions. Further, when we use the PBL method, we teach students how to practice critical thinking while solving realistic problems or addressing societal needs. This process helps them both to apply practical knowledge and to experience the intrinsic rewards of learning. This workshop presents the basics of Problem-Based Learning, with particular focus on how to use the process in any course and in any discipline. Participants will learn how to apply the powerful concepts of PBL in their own teaching practice.
