Immigration Status Issues
This page will provide information and links to help you with various immigration status issues. Please refer back to this page throughout your time at MTSU. It will be very helpful. As always, though, feel free to contact our office, or International Admissions for further clarification and assistance.
Maintaining Status
As an F-1 or J-1 student, it is your responsibility to maintain lawful status in accordance
with US immigration laws. The benefits associated with your visa status such as re-entry
in to the U.S., on-campus employment, and practical training, are only available if
you maintain lawful student status.
Leaving the University
If you are planning on taking a leave of absense or withdrawing from MTSU, you must
speak with an F-1 advisor before doing so, as this could affect your student status.
Transfer
In order to transfer from MTSU to another university within the United States, F-1
and J-1 students must request to have their SEVIS record be transferred to the new
school in order to maintain valid immigration status.
Extension
A program extension is intended for students who are unable to complete their degree
by the completion date indicated on the I-20 or DS-2019.
Distance Learning
Distance Learning through online classes is limited for F-1 and J-1 students. Only
one class in Fall or Spring can count toward full-time enrollment. Students receiving
government scholarships may have further restrictions that apply to online courses.
Reduced Course Load
Students in the US on F-1 and J-1 visas are required to carry a full program of study
each semester. Full-time is a minimum of 12 credit hours (9 for graduate students).
Special circumstances are allowed by regulations but must be approved by the PDSO
in Peck Hall 216.
Out of Status
F-1 students who have overstayed their authorized period or have otherwise failed
to maintain F-1 student status for fewer than 5 months may be reinstated to lawful
F-1 status.
